Ecofood

Description

Public food serving, such as school meals, can be seen as a tool to achieve healthier eating and a more sustainable consumption, in a perspective of “awareness raising and educational measures”. This is stated in the EU Public Health Program and in the European Action Plan for organic food and farming. In the EU’s latest initiative called “European classes: school fruit scheme”, it was pointed out that serving organic products is important in increasing food quality as well as in decreasing the environmental impact.

The project was linked to children’s nutrition, in particular at school. It was developed through a transnational perspective, with a local dimension, in order to foster cross-fertilization among the different involved actors. Different target groups were involved (teachers, children, politicians, families, local producers) and indeed, there was an opportunity to increase synergies among them, and to multiply the results of the project activities. The final objective was to create a higher level of interaction among the participants, as well as a long-standing cooperation. The project provided the chance to develop a long-term framework, so that the involved partners could create new projects and implicate many other actors.

Objectives

  1. Raising awareness in the target groups;
  2. Increasing the amount of local organic food in public schools;
  3. Develop solutions to facilitate the interaction between supply (producers) and demand

Impact

The impact of the conferences on the development of the cooperation, among the involved municipalities, was fundamental, thanks to the participation of different European realities, with different policies and approaches to food habits. The project was seen as a first step of a long-lasting cooperation; indeed, seminars and conferences gave the chance to obtain this. The outcome was the development of new projects among the involved partners. As a consequence, the impact could be seen on the direct participants, as well as on the context in which they live. In this framework, the evaluation and the dissemination process was an essential component of the project.
